Chapter 17

By the time the rogue started to come too, they were halfway to Cast Off, and Julian had managed to make some modifications to the set up. There were now a few extra wires strung to the front of the engine compartment, holding the AREVE glove in place so it could keep placing tracks while the train moved without Julian’s involvement. He’d used the time and the freedom to design a couple other things, one of which he’d given to Calli to put to use with her medical skills.

“Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey,” Julian said when the rogue stirred. He froze in place at the sound of Julian’s voice, his beady eyes racing around the compartment. “Yes, you are still alive. Can you speak?”

“Better than you, talking about wakey wakey,” the man slurred, his eyes focusing slowly on Julian.

“Heh. Cute. What’s your name?”

The rogue looked away.

“Come on,” Julian said. “I can’t keep calling you ‘hey you,’ or various terms.”

The rogue pursed his lips, refusing to give anything up.

“Okay, that’s how it’s going to be? Fine, your name is Cupcake. Hi, Cupcake. I’m Julian.”

“I heard your name, Dark Lord,” Cupcake said, snarling the sentence. “I’ve got nothing to say to you. Torture me, do whatever you want. I don’t care. I’m not giving you anything about my team.”

“I’m not going to torture you, Cupcake,” Julian said, settling back against the wall. “That’s not how this works. For starters, torture is barbaric and beneath people who wish to be able to hold onto their moral high ground, and I very much like the view from up here. Secondly, and far more importantly, it doesn’t work.”

Cupcake’s eyes narrowed, and his whiskers twitched. “What do you mean, it doesn’t work?”

“I’m not from around here, in case you haven’t figured that out,” Julian said. “Where I came from, there’s been dozens, if not hundreds, of studies on the effectiveness of torture. All of them have concluded the same thing - it doesn’t work, Cupcake. People will tell you what they think you want to hear, because it’s the best way to make the pain stop. They don’t give you the truth. Hell, half the time, Cupcake, they can’t think clearly enough to tell you the truth.” Julian shrugged and spread his arms, making himself look as opening and inviting as possible. The rogue was still suspicious, but at least seemed less so than he had a moment before. Julian wasn’t sure if what he was saying about torture was true, but he vaguely remembered hearing something along those lines at some point, and it didn’t matter if it was true. What mattered was the rogue believed Julian believed it.

“So why am I still alive?” the rogue said, struggling to sit up. He was still restrained by the Graspers, tugging him in multiple directions with a gentle but firm strength, and several layers of cables had been added to make sure there was no way he was going to slip the bonds.

“Because I do want to know things from you,” Julian said.
